April 6th : Celebrate Earth Day with Writing!
First a reminder of our writing workshop this weekend!
(DONATION BASED RSVP REQUIRED)
By focusing on nature writing, the workshop serves as a space to discuss the ways marginalized communities stay connected with and protect nature. The workshop is also a chance to discuss issues like sustainability and climate change and the impact on marginalized NYC communities. By writing their own nature stories, participants will add to a growing tapestry of storytelling that centers BIPOC and other marginalized identities in the face of climate crisis.
No previous writing workshop is necessary to participate. Pen and paper will be provided.
April 7th - Louder Than the Lies Author Evening
Join us in welcoming Ellie Yang Camp visiting us for her first event for the book outside of California as she shares her amazing book and in conversation with Hannah Bae!
“What does it mean to be Asian American? How does our racialization in the United States shape our lives and our worldviews? With candor and care, Ellie Yang Camp, a Taiwanese American educator, offers a set of ideas and frameworks to guide us toward a more nuanced understanding of these questions. Drawing on her experiences and observations from history, conversations with Asian American peers, and lessons derived from other people of color, Camp unpacks the confusing dynamics that underlie anti-Asian stigmas and stereotypes in the US”
RSVP required to ensure you get a seat and are able to receive a personalized copy!
April 10th- Somos Xicanas Anthology Reading
Join us for a night of reading from multiple writers from the anthology Somos Xicanas. We will have a Q&A and the writers will sign and personalize your copies!
What does it really mean to be a Xicana? This anthology offers a space for the assertion, exploration and cultivation of a proud Xicana identity. It delivers messages about race, culture, class, economy, sexuality and spirituality within historical, political and personal contexts. Somos Xicanas echoes the collective voice of the Xicana community as a whole, while simultaneously celebrating the co-existence of multiple subjectivities alive within each of the contributions. These are a few of the varied lenses through which readers may appreciate the multiple layers of complex identities that make up what it means to be a Xicana, as expressed through the writings of Xicanas themselves.
