Nature & Us: A Generative Writing Workshop
(DONATION BASED RSVP REQUIRED)
Early morning writing sesh that will be fueled by some coffee and tea by Pilas Cafe. Join us for a creative writing workshop in celebration of Earth Day! We will read and discuss excerpts from works by BIPOC writers that honor the natural world. We will read excerpts from poems and essays by authors like Ada Limon, Sandra Cisneros, Aimee Nezhukumatahil, and Robin Wall Kimmerer.
By focusing on nature writing, the workshop serves as a space to discuss the ways marginalized communities stay connected with and protect nature. The workshop is also a chance to discuss issues like sustainability and climate change and the impact on marginalized NYC communities. By writing their own nature stories, participants will add to a growing tapestry of storytelling that centers BIPOC and other marginalized identities in the face of climate crisis.
No previous writing workshop is necessary to participate. Pen and paper will be provided.

With candor and care, Ellie Yang Camp, a Taiwanese American educator, offers a set of ideas and frameworks to guide us toward a more nuanced understanding of these questions. Drawing on her experiences and observations from history, conversations with Asian American peers, and lessons derived from other people of color, Camp unpacks the confusing dynamics that underlie anti-Asian stigmas and stereotypes in the US”
